Docking stations are portable devices to connect computer peripherals to a laptop and convert it to a desktop. This connectivity does not hamper the original functionality of the laptop.
Docking stations are connected through hot, cold and standby connection mode, based on power status of the computer. Docking stations are broadly classified as:
Breakout dock: a breakout dock supplies additional ports also for connectivity enhancement. It is mainly a proprietary accessory and is provided along with many laptops.
Converter dock: converter dock use USB ports to provide multiple connection option in a single port. Numerous converters for display, memory cards, speakers etc can be connected to the same USB hub. These are generally provided by outside vendors.
Hybrid dock: a hybrid dock directly attaches to the motherboard of the computer and works along with the internal components.
Recently, a new category of docking stations- desktop docking stations and mobile docking stations have knocked the market. Desktop docking stations, as the name suggests, is just like a stand for erecting your laptop. It removes the space constraints and is also helpful in maintaining correct postures as well as giving suitable position while computing.
Similarly, mobile docking stations are meant to provide mobility in vehicles and other places where you can use your laptop while doing some other work also. Most automobile manufacturers have started entering into agreements with third party vendors and proprietary manufacturers to provide a mobile docking station in the original purchase of vehicles.
